Road Trip 2009

November 1st, 2009 · 6 Comments

I need a vacation! So I’m going to take one. I have extra PTO so I’m pretty much being forced to take it. I have over 40 hours that I have to take or I lose it.

I was going to offer you all the opportunity to tell me where to go and what to do but I figure that would have involved me going straight to hell and fucking myself. Go that idea is OUT!

Before we get to the destinations we have to discuss the rules. If we don’t have rules we have anarchy. We aren’t the Dutch here people, were Americans we have rules.

  • I’m diving. I’ve never driven and where of significance so I’m hitting the road to see this great country! I have to avoid all interstates when ever possible and especially toll roads. It might take a little longer but so what I have over a week to get there and back.
  • No chain restaurants whatsoever. I have to eat in locally owned establishments. Or at least local chains that aren’t available here in Kansas City, and document them with pics of the food.
  • NO HOOKERS!

So following those simple rules I have some come up with a loose plan of attack.

But I haven’t come up with a name, yet. This is where you come in, I need one of you creative types to think of a name for this little excursion. Think about it while you check out the itinerary.

On Friday Nov. 27th I’m hitting the road for Memphis, Tennessee. Home of some fat music singer that my mom likes to listen to. It should take me about 8-10 hours depending on the route. I’ll spend one night there.

Saturday Nov. 28th after another day of roughly 10 hours of driving I’ll arrive in Tallahassee Florida to spend one night.

Sunday Nov 29th it’s on to the final destination of Key West Florida. Spend 3-4 days there then begin the drive back.

On Dec 3rd I plan to begin the drive back. I haven’t thought out the route back but I’d rather not take the same way back. (Still looking for places to go that are on the way.)

Sunday Dec 6th will be the recovery day. Because after all that driving I’m going to need it. The one way trip will take a total of 27 hours (ish) and I’ll travel 1630 miles (ish) and cost about $140 (ish).

I’m also still looking for an Iphone app that will let me import the route from a wed site and use the GPS of the phone to keep me on track, and tell me where I am most of the time.

Are there places along the way that I have to stop in? I’m still planning a lot of this out. I haven’t made any hotel reservations or invested any dollars so its still all up in there air.

Have you thought of a title? I do have some good ideas via twitter. But I thought I give the rest of you non-twitters a chance at it. Leave it in the comments.

You should use the LocalEats iPhone app! Only has local restaurants and lists the best! It’s .99 in the iTunes store, but if you email me, I’ll send you a free Promo code if you’ll test out our selections :)

Do you have any idea how long it is from Tallahassee to Key West if you don’t take a highway?

Anyhow if you are committed to it, I’d recommend going over to the Atlantic coast side of Florida and driving down SR A1A.

NOLA – I thought about it on the way back. Haven’t planned that route yet.

Kelsey – You’ll be hearing from me.

DLC – I should take me about 10 hours to get from Tallahassee to Key West. I have to take that highway its the only one to the Keys. I was going to try to avoid Miami.

“D” That’s a hell of day from Tallahassee to Key West…might be stretch…you don’t want to drive the key highway in the dark..

…Run north up the coast from the keys to Charleston then up and over the Smokey’s back up the E. Tennessee and Middle Kentucky..it is a great route…
