It was just a blatent attempt to get Kate (a fan fav) more involved in the show, and I saw her son being Aaron from a mile away. As for the bogus story about how many survivors there are. We already know Sayid switched to Ben's side. I think there are a number of people who join forces with him, and the Oceanic 6 agree to say the people in Ben's group are dead so Dharma can't find them.
